When I was working in corporate as a manager tasked with developing the people on my team, the mandate was for us to create a Coaching Culture. Rather than always calling the shots to meet business goals, we were told to frequently hold conversations with our respective teams in order to get to know them on a deeper level, earn their trust so they improve their performance and increase their engagement in the workplace. Although I’m blessed with a natural competence for coaching and bringing out the best in people, deep inside I always had doubts if I was doing this coaching thing the right way. I received little to no training from the companies I worked with on how to be a coach, let alone being a transformational one. So I relied heavily on my intuition. I read tons of books and articles and actively sought formal external trainings. I practically had to beg, steal or borrow ideas to learn how to be one. I was flying by the seat of my pants!
I have seen people improve exponentially and flourish in the workplace as a result of our effective coaching relationships. But there were a few that I failed to serve well enough and lost to declining performance, demotivation, procrastination, absenteeism…the list goes on forever. “You can’t save them all”, I would tell myself. But on the flip side, I would also ask myself “What could I have done better?”
There is a huge gap between company expectations and skillsets when it comes to this Coaching Culture that we are trying to cultivate in the workplace. We tend to equate good leadership skills with good coaching skills, but the reality is that they are very different. Great leaders inspire you to follow. Great coaches inspire you to be a great leader yourself!
Has anyone actually taught you the true skills to coach powerfully beyond building rapport, actively listening, and putting yourself in the other person’s shoe? Have you earned the right to coach your people or are you just coaching simply by virtue of your job description as the manager? Do you know how to make a real and palpable connection with your coachees every time you sit with them in your weekly one-on-ones? … Or do you dread it?
If you answered NO to any of these questions, or especially if you said YES to the last one, then I invite you to attend this one-day intensive on coaching skills mastery called THE LEADER-COACH . This is not your typical how-to guide for creating a coaching culture in your organization.
